Stranger Things is one of the most talked-about shows of the past few years. The sci-fi series debuted on Netflix in the summer of 2016, and despite very little promotion for the show, it immediately became a smash hit. The second season hit in late 2017, and a third is currently on the way, with all eight episodes set to drop on the streaming service on July 4th. The season three trailer was recently online, which already has many excited about getting to return to the sleepy town of Hawkins, Indiana, this time in the summer of 1985.
The series follows the citizens of this small town as a portal to another dimension is opened up in the local laboratory. Meanwhile, an escaped girl with supernatural powers finds her way into a group of nerdy boys, who quickly discover that she may be the key to sealing up the portal and defeating the monster that is tormenting their town.
But before we get too excited about the upcoming season, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look back at how the series began. So let's make our way through some season one trivia to see which Stranger Things character we're most like!
What game do the boys like to play?
Stranger Things is set during the 1980s – at a time when kids had to get a lot more creative when it came to entertaining themselves. Video games weren’t nearly as popular as they are today, and the Internet had yet to be invented. Therefore, the boys in the show enjoy retreating to the depth of Mike’s basement to play board games with one another. They’re particularly fond of this nerdy role-playing game. The main conflict at the center of Stranger Things, is that a portal has been opened up to another dimension in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. While only a few people know how this portal was opened, no one seems to have any idea of how to close it. This is what leads to the disappearance of Will and Barb, while also unleashing the monster on the town. What town does the story take place?
The majority of events that take place in Stranger Things all happen in the same small town. While this town is totally fictional, the Duffer brothers did draw on real locations and towns from other stories to create theirs. For instance, it’s not hard to see how they would have been inspired from the settings of a number of Stephen King novels when it came to creating the town that’s featured in their show. What nickname does Mike give Eleven?
While Eleven may not be her birth name, it’s ultimately the moniker that’s given to this character while she’s kept at Hawkins National Laboratory and exploited for her supernatural abilities. This is the road that meets at the intersection of Cornwallis and Kerley, and it’s where Chief Jim Hopper begins his search for Will. At the start of the series, Jim Hopper has a very laid back approach to his job. He is the Chief of Police in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, where rarely anything exciting ever happens. Therefore, he feels as though he can show up to work late, hungover, and spend the mornings easing into the activities of the day. Of course, his character does a complete 180 by the end of the first season, as he’s willing to do everything in his power to rescue Joyce’s son.
What club is Mr. Clarke in charge of?
One of the unsung heroes of Stranger Things, Mr. Clarke is no doubt one of the reasons that the four boys are so interested in science and electronics. He seems to make time for his favorite pupils after class and even after school. And we even get a scene of Mr. Clarke telling the boys how to build a sensory deprivation tank despite it being the weekend – when he definitely isn’t getting paid to be a teacher. There’s still a lot we don’t know about the Upside Down. While it seems to be a reflection of the town of Hawkins, Indiana, we have no idea why or how it came into existence. It could be another dimension or it could be Hawkins in the future – there’s really no way to know at this point in time. But while we may not know how it came to be, we have been told how a portal between the two “worlds” ended up being opening in Hawkins. What analogy does Mr. Clarke use to explain another dimension?
When the boys start to learn more about the Upside Down, they take it upon themselves to learn more about the possibility of another dimension by asking their science teacher, Mr. Clarke. Mr. Clarke tells the boys how they could theoretically access this alternate reality with a handy analogy. He also uses a pen and a paper plate to emphasize this point. The boys eventually use this knowledge to try and contact Will on the other side. So do you remember the example Mr. Clarke uses?
What does Lucas use to fight against the monster?
While all of the boys are into science, Lucas may be the biggest skeptic of them all. At first, he doesn’t want to accept what’s going on. And when the other boys immediately went to welcome Eleven into the group, Lucas is afraid that her superpowers will only result in more bad things happening. That being said, Lucas is no coward, as seen when he sets off on his own to find the portal and try to rescue Will. Lucas also has a handy instrument that he brings with him, which he eventually used to fight the Demogorgon.

Of course, Eleven isn’t the only one who has a fondness for sugary foods. Hopper seems to eat his fair share of doughnuts throughout the show as well – just as one might expect from a small town cop – while Dustin also has quite the sweet tooth. When the gang posts up at the school cafeteria, Dustin takes this as an opportunity to raid the fridges. There’s a reason that Hopper seems so complacent and unmotivated at the beginning of season one, and it has to do with the character’s troubled past. He’s someone who is ultimately mourning a loss. Will Eleven can use her powers at any time, she can only do so much on her own. However, she did pick up a number of tricks while she was being used as a test subject at Hawkins National Laboratory. These tricks allowed her to stretch her abilities, going so far as to let her contact a creature from another dimension. While this is ultimately what ends up opening the portal to the Upside Down, it also helps her rescue Will by the end of the first season. What’s the name of Will’s fort?
Being the most reserved out of his four friends, Will has a secret fort that he has built out in the woods behind this house. We learn from his mom that Will would often go there to be alone, and we see that the fort is also filled with a number of science tools and fantasy art. While trapped in the Upside Down, Will is also able to use this fort to hide from the Demogorgon. And when Joyce and Hopper venture into the other dimension, they know exactly where to search for Will.
Who is Terry Ives?
Though she may not appear in very many episodes of the series, Terry Ives is certainly a very important character. Without her, we would likely have no portal to the Upside Down. Unfortunately, the character doesn’t give us much insight into her past, as her brain seems all but fried from the many experiments she participated in under the oversight of Dr. Martin Brenner. But do you remember exactly how Terry Ives is related to one of the other characters in the series?
What does Joyce use to speak with her son?
To pretty much everyone else in Hawkins, Joyce seems like a distraught mother who has completely lost all sense of reality once her son goes missing. Of course, we know that that’s not the case, and Joyce clearly doesn’t care if other people think she’s crazy when there’s still a possibility of getting her son back. She comes to believe that she can use electricity to contact Will, as she seems to get a static phone call from him early on during season one. So what else does she come to use?
What was Barb trying to do when she accidentally cut her hand?
If not for Barb cutting her hand, there’s a good chance that she never would have gotten pulled into the Upside Down by the Demogorgon. After all, we know the Demogorgon is attracted to blood. And not unlike the shark in Jaws, it can come looking for its next prey after just a few drops. This no doubt also puts Eleven in the monster’s sights whenever she uses her power, which often results in her nose bleeding. But do you remember what causes Barb to cut her hand?
What does Joyce call Hopper?
Being that the characters are both from the same small town, it’s clear that Joyce and Hopper already have a history with each other. We come to learn that they even attended high school together. But before we ever know that this is the case, their familiarity is established when Joyce refers to Hopper by this nickname. While Joyce ultimately goes on to date another former classmate in season two, many fans suspect that these two will ultimately end up together.
Who defeats the Demogorgon at the end of season one?
In season one, there’s only one monster for the citizens of Hawkins to deal with. But it certainly causes its fair share of destruction throughout these eight episodes. It results in the disappearance of Will, the demise of Barb, as well the loss of a number of other secondary characters along the way. One of the reasons that Stranger Things was a success was the show’s nostalgia factor.
