Comics books have been widely popular for nearly a century now, if not more. The general definition of a comic book is “a magazine that presents a story in the form of a comic strip, and typically involved superheroes” (Dictionary). This is true in the case of the two major comic book companies: Marvel Comics and DC Comics.

DC Comics is known for the creation of characters such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Supergirl. There have been many adaptations (both film and television) for each of these specific characters. Not all of these superheroes have “powers” per se, but have technology or equipment that aids them in protecting their cities and fighting off the bad guys.

Marvel Comics is known for the creation of characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, Thanos, Black Widow, Wolverine and many more. The Marvel Cinematic Universe refers to the film franchise that includes the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy and other individual superhero films like Black Panther and Doctor Strange. Stan Lee is known as the writer and publisher of the Marvel Comics, and would always make a cameo in the MCU films for a few short seconds.

Although there have been many versions, the origin story for this character is normally the same. T’Challa was gifted with enhanced powers, such as speed and strength, and with the help of his sister, his Black Panther suit got an upgrade.

Spider-Man is a character who is from the Marvel Comics and is also one of the newer additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previous adaptations of this character were made into solo movies, where Peter Parker was merely fighting crime within his own city. However, the latest (and youngest) version of Spider-Man has become a sort of protege of Tony Stark, who helped design a new suit for him. He developed his unique abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider.

Before he became “Captain America,” Steve Rogers was just a boy susceptible to getting hurt because of his small size. That didn’t stop him from wanting to make the world a better place or do his part into bringing forth justice. After being injected with the Super Soldier Serum, Steve developed substantial superhuman abilities that made him unnaturally strong.

Hulk

The Hulk is a character from the Marvel Comics and he is also one of the original Avengers form the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before the more recent adaptation, there was an individual film released about this character. The Hulk is an alter ego of a scientist named Dr. Bruce Banner, who was affected by gamma radiation. Sometimes he has no control over when and how long he will stay as the Hulk. In the more recent films he and Black Widow came up with a “lullaby” that helped bring him back.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is a character from the DC Comics and she is also a member of the Justice League. In the films, Diana explains that she was sculpted out of clay by her mother and brought to life by Zeus. She grew up with the other Amazons, and her aunt taught her how to fight so she might one day take down Ares, the God of War. Diana had joined forces with Batman and Superman to put an end to otherworldly threats.

Wolverine is a character from the Marvel Comics who is a part of the X-Men franchise. Wolverine is one of the oldest characters in that universe thanks to his ability to self-heal. This slowed down his aging substantially, where he lived for centuries. Wolverine was born as a mutant with retractable claws. However, after being experimented on his bones were encased in a metal called Adamantium, making his claws nearly indestructible. He was one of the more unconventional professors at the mutant school.

Tony Stark was characterized as being a wealthy businessman who was self-absorbed in his own creations. Not only had he inherited his father’s legacy of Stark Industries, but Tony is also extremely intelligent on a number of different fronts. Of course his most iconic creation is the Iron Man suits. Tony developed a conscious when he learns about how many lives he and his team have been responsible for over the years.

Charles Xavier, otherwise known as Professor X is a character from the Marvel Comics as well as the X-Men franchise. He was one of the many mutants born in this particular universe, and his abilities are quite strong in comparison to others. With his telekinesis he was able to read and control the minds of people. He founded an educational institution to both protect and teach mutants about their different abilities. A machine called “Cerebro” was developed that allowed him to track those with the mutant gene.

Thor

Thor is a character from the Marvel Comics and he is also one of the original Avengers from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When Thor is first introduced, he’s a bit of a show-off and doesn’t know the true responsibility of being a prince, let alone the future king. His father decided to teach him a lesson by banishing him to Earth, and enchanting his hammer so only someone worthy could wield its powers. Luckily Thor is able to use it once again when he proves he can be a good leader.

Green Arrow

Green Arrow is a character from the DC Comics and is the main protagonist of his own television show. His real name is Oliver Queen and unlike some of the other superheroes from this quiz, Green Arrow is more of a vigilante. Sure, he fights crime in the middle of the night dressed in a costume, but he’s not entirely moral about it. There have been times where Green Arrow has teamed up with some of the other characters from the DC Comics, primarily those apart of the Justice League.

Jean Grey is a character from the Marvel Comics, and more specifically from the X-Men franchise. She is one of the many mutants a part of that specific universe, and she holds similar powers to the infamous Charles Xavier. After sensing some dark powers in her, Charles helped groom her under his supervision at the mutant school. However, after sacrificing herself to save her fellow team members, Jean is brought back and had awakened that dark part of her nicknamed the Phoenix.

The Joker is a character from the DC Comics and there has been a number of different adaptations of him over the years. He is always characterized as the villain and is usually involved in some sort of illegal activities. The Joker’s closest ally would be of course Harley Quinn, although they don’t have a very healthy relationship to say the very least. Batman is usually the one who is always hunting down the Joker to protect the city of Gotham.

Cyclops is a character from Marvel Comics, more specifically from the X-Men franchise. Scott Summers is initially introduced as the love interest of Jean Grey, where the two of them worked as professors at the mutant school. It isn’t until the latest “timeline” of X-Men that Scott’s origin story was explained. His mutant abilities consist of emitting powerful energy beams through his eyes, which is why he’s always wearing some sort of protective eyewear. In the movies he has an older brother.

The Human Torch is a character from Marvel Comics, more specifically from the Fantastic Four franchise. He is known as Johnny Storm, and he and several other members of his team were on a spacecraft when they were unexpectedly hit with cosmic rays. As a result, he and the others all inherited superhuman abilities. Johnny’s consisted of being able to ignite himself on fire and to fly. His oldest sister was also one of the team members who were in the craft.

After exhausting all other options he turned to the mystic arts, which ended up changing his life forever. Now he is the guardian of the Time Stone, one of six Infinity Stones.

Nick Fury is known as the Director of the secret government organization S.H.I.E.L.D which deals with a lot of undercover operations. Catwoman is a character from DC Comics and she’s had several cinematic adaptations over the years. She is a bit of a unique character based on the fact that she’s neither a true “villain” or a true “superheroine.” She’s a little bit of both, because she’s often portrayed as doing things but there is usually a reason for it. Apart from her criminal activity that is carried on throughout the night, Catwoman is also often depicted as being a love interest for Batman, being the two both work out of Gotham City.

Aquaman is a unique character because he’s half human, half Atlantean. Unlike some of the other villains who merely play a role in one single movie, Thanos has been included in a number of films over the years. He is an alien from Titan who had the burning desire to collect all six of the Infinity Stones so he could wipe out half of all living creatures in the universe. He raised his adoptive children Nebula and Gamora from when they were children.

What’s unique about this character, in particular, is that there have been many adaptations in the comics with this character both as a male and as a female. In the recent 2019 film, Captain Marvel is characterized as a woman. Carol Danvers is known as a member of the Avengers squad, and has super speed, super strength, and the abilities to fly and project energy.

Rogue is a character from Marvel Comics, more specifically she’s from the X-Men franchise. Rogue is one of the younger mutants who is depicted in the original film series, and unlike other mutant abilities, Rogue’s were much more dangerous. With a single touch, she was capable of absorbing someone else’s superpowers and also their strength. For this reason, she opted to wear gloves at any given time, that way she wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone. When word spread about a potential cure Rogue was very excited.

When she is first introduced, she’s depicted as Natasha Romanoff the S.H.I.E.L.D agent who was responsible for helping recruit the other team members. Reed Richards is a highly intelligent engineer who was on the spacecraft when it was unexpectedly hit by cosmic rays. Initially they had not shown any symptoms until they arrived back on earth, where each member of the team had unusual side effects. Mister Fantastic’s abilities consist of body elasticity and physical endurance. He became the leader of the Fantastic Four team who fought a number of threats.

Storm is introduced at the beginning of the film series and was a professor at the mutant school. Quite similar to her superhero name, Storm’s abilities consisted of being able to manipulate the weather. She was known for unleashing lightning right before a fight. When the announcement about a cure was released to the public, Storm was particularly upset because she believed there was nothing to be cured from.

There have been several occasions in which The Flash and Superman have decided to race to see who is truly faster.

Peter essentially became a “space pirate.” After being captured from the authorities he met the other future guardians, including Gamora, Drax, Groot and Rocket Raccoon.

Rocket is known for having a bit of a spontaneous and somewhat aggressive personality. He and Peter Quill are always arguing about who is the leader of their group. He is first introduced in the films as a bounty hunter and his only friend was Groot. He is a genetically modified raccoon who is highly skilled in combat.
