Walt Disney is a film studio that is known for its animated films that they have been hitting the big screen for decades. In fact, the first movie titled Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out in 1937. That makes the film over eighty years old! In those eighty years, Disney has released a number of children's movies that have been deemed the "classics." For the most part, the company sticks with princess tales or animal animations, however there have been a recent few that don't necessarily fit this category.

Some of the original Disney princesses include Aurora, Jasmine, Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Snow White, and Mulan. However, in the last decade or so there have been a number of new female characters that have made the list, such as Anna, Rapunzel, and Tiana.

Disney movies more or less all have some of the same qualities. If it is a princess movie, they usually fall in love with a prince and some greater force stands in their way. Being that they're children's films, Disney movies are also known for their amazing soundtracks. And what would a Disney film be without its infamous villains? These are the characters that always try to stand in the way of the main character's happiness.

Cinderella

Cinderella is a Disney princess who was the main protagonist of the 1950 film. She is characterized as being a pure and kind hearted woman, even from a young age. Unfortunately she had to deal with a great loss after losing her mother. Her father made the decision to remarry, believing she needed a maternal presence in her life. When she too lost a parent once more, Cinderella was alone in the world. Her step mother took advantage of her obedience and goodness by forcing her to do everything for the family.

Ariel

Ariel is a Disney princess who was the main protagonist in the film The Little Mermaid. Although her daughter was the protagonist in the second film, Ariel still played a major role. As a young teenager, Ariel felt like she didn't quite belong in the water. She was constantly collecting objects from the human world, and would even go to the surface to watch them. When her father learned of this he forbade her from interacting with the human world.

Elsa is a Disney queen who was one of the main characters in the film Frozen. There are a few short films with Elsa, Anna, and some of the other characters. Frozen 2 is also expected to release later this year. Elsa was born with unique ice magic. As a child, she and her younger sister Anna liked to play in her snow and ice. That was until Anna was struck by it and needed to be cured by the rock trolls. From there, Elsa started to grow afraid of what she could do.

She is characterized as being a bit of a free spirit, in the sense that she didn't always do what her father wished. Despite being the daughter of the village chief, Pocahontas could always be found roaming the forests and not being responsible. One afternoon she meets a man who did not come from her village. She learned he was a stranger who had come to search for riches on her land.

Beast

Beast (otherwise known as Prince Adam) was one of the main characters from the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast. In the first scene of the movie, the narrator reveals how Prince Adam came to be the beast. He had neglected to help an old woman who turned out to be a sorceress. She put a curse on him, one where his outside would reflect who he was on the inside. She gave him an enchanted rose, and if someone learned to love him before the last petal fell, the curse would be lifted.

Aurora

Princess Aurora is the main characters from the 1959 Disney film Sleeping Beauty. The movie begins with a celebration of Princess Aurora as a baby. Three fairies decide to give Aurora magical gifts. The first was a gift of beauty the second of song. Suddenly, the villain of the film Maleficent interrupted the celebration to bestow a gift of her own. She cursed the baby to prick her finger on a spinning wheel by her sixteenth birthday. The third fairy then used her gift to change the curse to be that she falls in a deep sleep.

Flynn Rider

Flynn Rider is the male protagonist from the 2010 Disney film Tangled. At the beginning of the movie he is first seen stealing the crown from the king and queen. Although he was accompanied by two other villains, he manages to slip out of their grasp, and the kingdom's guards. He climbs Rapunzel's tower and although he thought he had gotten away, she knocks him out. After waking up, Flynn discovers he's bound by her long hair, and she begins to question how he came to know her location.

Prince Eric

Prince Eric is one of the main characters from the Disney movie The Little Mermaid. After Ariel surfaces to people watch, she notices Prince Eric on his ship. She looks at him longingly, and when his ship unexpectedly starts to sink, she takes it upon herself to save him. It was revealed at the beginning of the film that Prince Eric was being pressured to find a princess to marry. After hearing Ariel's singing voice, he decides that she is going to be the one he marries.

Aladdin

Aladdin is the main male protagonist from the Disney film Aladdin. He is characterized as being a sarcastic, smooth, street-smart guy who doesn't have much to call his own. The only way he's able to survive is by taking what's not his, and his plans usually involve his pet monkey Abu. It is revealed that Aladdin is the "diamond in the rough" who is needed to retrieve the genie lamp. When he becomes the master, he asks to be made to look like a prince so he can win the affection of Jasmine.

Simba

Simba is the main protagonist from the movie The Lion King and is also a main character in The Lion King II. He is just a cub when he is first introduced in the film franchise. Although he was the Prince of the Pride Lands, Simba didn't care much about responsibility. The only thing he focused on was seeing what trouble he and young Nala could get into. After the accident involving his father, Simba decided to run away from home. He grew up in the jungle with Timon and Pumbaa as his surrogate parents.

Fa Mulan

Fa Mulan is a Disney princess who was the main protagonist in the 1998 film Mulan. She is characterized as being opinionated, irresponsible at times, and loyal. Despite the fact that she was unable to be matched to a suitor, she decides to make up for it in a different way. Impersonating a boy, she takes her father's place in the war to protect him. Luckily she had the assistance of her guardian dragon and cricket to help prepare her.

Maleficent

Maleficent is the main antagonist of the Disney film Sleeping Beauty. She makes a very dramatic appearance in the movie while a celebration was being held in Princess Aurora's honor. It was evident she had a bit of a reputation for being ruthless, since many of the citizens and even the king and queen were anxious by her arrival. It's unclear what grudge she held against King Stefan, but places a curse on Princess Aurora nonetheless. When the baby goes into hiding, it's Maleficent's grow that finds her years later.

Hercules

Hercules is the main protagonist from the 1997 Disney film Hercules. He was a just a baby in the beginning scene of the movie, where his father Zeus and mother Hera were holding a birthday celebration in Olympus. Unfortunately Hercules's uncle Hades had decided to get rid of the baby so he wouldn't get in the way of his plans. He had his two minions give him a potion that turned him mortal. Since Hercules didn't drink the last drop, he still had his super strength.

Anna

Anna is a Disney princess who makes her first appearance in the film Frozen. As a child, Anna was young, adventurous, and believed in magic. After being hit by her sister's magic though, Anna's memories are taken and Elsa closes herself off from the world. This leaves Anna to grow up alone, with no idea what happened to the two of them. At her sister's coronation, Anna confronts Elsa about why she stopped spending time with her. Upon rediscovering Elsa has magic, Anna goes out into the night to track her down.

Moana is a new Disney princess who was the main protagonist of the 2016 film. As a baby, Moana was particularly drawn to the ocean, despite the fact that her father was constantly pulling her away. The ocean picked Moana to be the one to return the Heart of Te Fiti to the rightful place, when she was old enough. As she grew up though, her father put himself in between her and the water, reminding her that her place was on the island and with her people.

Nala

Nala is one of the main characters from the Disney movie The Lion King. She, just like Simba, was just a cub in the beginning scenes. She decides to put on a disguise and leave the palace, where she ends up running into Aladdin. It's clear from the first few moments that they shared a certain connection.

The lost princess was forced to grow up in a large tower away from the world. The woman who took her raised her to believe she was her mother.

Kristoff is a main character from the 2013 Disney movie Frozen. He is introduced as a travel companion of Anna, where she manages to persuade him to take her to the North Mountain. He was also seen as a child in the first beginning scenes as an orphan boy wandering around in the wilderness. He witnessed Anna being cured of her sister's ice magic and was later adopted by the rock trolls themselves. He is a bit of a quirky character, and falls in love with Anna on their journey together.

Prince Naveen is one of the main characters from the 2009 Disney movie The Princess and the Frog. He is characterized as being care-free, musically inclined, and was known to avoid any and all responsibility. When he arrived in New Orleans, he was approached by the shadow man who ended up turning him into a frog. Unfortunately after seeing Tiana in her dress and tiara, he believed she was a princess. After persuading her to release him from his curse, she ended up being turned into a frog as well.

Li Shang is a main character from the movie Disney movie Mulan. As the son of the General, there was a certain number of expectations placed on Li Shang that he had to uphold. This included training his new recruits so they were well enough to protect China from the Huns attack. When Mulan was first introduced to Li Shang (as a man), it was evident he was a little intense. He worked them tirelessly, and when Mulan couldn't keep up he asked her to go home.

Maui

Maui is one of the main characters from the 2016 Disney movie titled Moana. He is revealed to be the one who had taken the Heart of Te Feti in the first place. With his magical hook, Maui is capable of transforming into any animal he wishes, although he's most often turning into a bird. He loses his hook and ends up being stranded on an island after he had taken the heart. Moana's grandmother tells her about him, and says he must be the one to accompany her on the mission.

Megara is one of the female protagonists from the Disney movie Hercules. She is first introduced when Hercules has completed his training with Phil. It was also evident that she was associated with Hades, and played an important role in his play to take over Olympus. Hades came to the realization that there was something romantic between Meg and Hercules, and decided to use that to his advantage.

Philip (the prince) is one of the characters from the Disney movie Sleeping Beauty. Following the events of Maleficent interrupting Princess Aurora's celebration, King Stefan ordered for his baby daughter to leave the castle. He had only wanted to very best for her, and that meant being as far away as possible. She was entrusted with three somewhat incapable faeries. Just a day before she was supposed to return home, Princess Aurora meets Prince Philip in the forest and the two fall in love.

After building a place for them to live, Tarzan was left orphaned from a wild cat. A female gorilla heard his cries and came to his rescue. After breaking the statue of the Great Dragon, Mushu took it's place and went to Mulan's aid. He helped her keep her secret of being a woman.

Kiara is the main character in the Disney movie The Lion King II. Following the events of the first film, Simba and Nala rule over the Pride Lands together, and gave birth to a daughter. She too would follow in her father's footsteps. This made him a little cautious about allowing her to wander far from home, quite like he and Nala had a bad habit of doing. Kiara knew from a young age that she didn't want everything to be decided for her.

Ursula

Ursula is the main antagonist from the Disney movie The Little Mermaid. It is revealed that she has bad intentions when it comes to making deals with merpeople. When she sends her eels to go spying on Ariel, she believes the naive mermaid is her ticket to getting what she really wants. That being the king's trident. Ariels arrives in her little underwater cave and Ursula makes herself appear as if she wants to help. With a little bit of luring, she manages to get Ariel to sign her name on the scroll.

When Hercules was just a baby, his father had formed Pegasus out of a cloud, and gifted him to his son. The two bonded quickly, and Pegasus slept in the same room as him. He is the brother of Zeus, and holds some resentment over his brother that he gets to rule Olympus while Hades is forced to reside in the Underworld. When he discovers that the planets will one day align, Hades comes up with the plan to take what his brother has. Unfortunately, his nephew Hercules was prophesied to be the one able to stop him. As a result, he gets his little minions to get rid of him.

Kovu

Kovu is one of the main characters from the Disney movie The Lion King II. He was just a cub when he is introduced, and didn't live in the Pride Lands at the time. After wandering far from home, he meets Kiara and the two narrowly escape a crocodile attack. He seems far more mature than Kiara who was naive and simply wanted to play. Upon his mother bringing him back home, it was evident that Kovu was to be molded to take avenge Scar.

Jane is the female protagonist from the Disney movie Tarzan. She and her father were researchers who led an expedition to study gorillas. When she first arrived in the jungle, she was very much overdressed and a little naive to the dangers of her environment. While drawing, she encounters a group of baboons who chase her down, which leads to Tarzan rescuing her. Despite the fact she didn't want to be saved by him because of his wild nature, she was grateful for his help.

Prince Hans is one of the main antagonists from the Disney movie Frozen. Following the events that lead to Elsa and Anna growing apart, the kingdom (and several others) arrive in Arendelle to witness the coronation of Queen Elsa. Prince Hans was among the many invited, and he and Anna have a little moment before the ceremony. The two meet up once more during the party, where they spend most of the night. By the end, Prince Hans proposes and Anna eagerly says yes.
