Only Hermione Could Name All Of These Secondary Harry Potter Characters!

Seven books and eight films! It is safe to say that Harry Potter has influenced many children and adults over the years. After all, it may be a tale about magic, but it is so much more than that. It is about love, friendship and loyalty. It is about fighting for what we believe in and what we ought to protect. It is essentially a story about the theme good vs bad and we are grateful for its existence.

We have read and reread the books. We have watched and re-watched the films, and Harry Potter will never get old. We put it on in the days that we feel down. We put it on on days that we are happy. We watch them every lazy Sunday or every time we are sick. The Harry Potter universe is here to get us through any rough patches because every time we watch we feel that we are right there and that we are a part of it.

We are glad to hear that Harry is a wizard. We love to see Harry, Hermione and Ron become best friends each time anew.

So, let's see if all of these rereads and re-watches have had any impact on us! Let's try and name as many Harry Potter secondary characters as we can and have some fun!

Name this character

Kreacher wasn't the first house elf we met however, this character was! Unlike Kreacher he has a very kind heart and he wants to protect Harry Potter in the beginning of the second film even if he didn't owe him anything. As it is stated in Wikipedia, he "was a brave, loyal house-elf, willing to put himself in dangerous situations when he knew it to be the right thing to do." He was helpful before Harry freed him from the Malfoy's, so he is even more helpful after! Without this character, Harry wouldn't have succeeded in defeating Voldemort. He knows it and we know it. That is why we are forever grateful for meeting this awesome character! Remember his name?

Question 2

Name this character

And since we're talking about Dumbledore's Army, let's talk about another member. We meet this character in David Yates' Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (2007). She is one year younger from Harry, Hermione and Ron and she is Ravenclaw, but somehow they manage to meet and we're very happy about that! The character is portrayed by actress Evanna Lynch who, according to IMDb, "was a fan of the Harry Potter novels long before being cast in the films. She claims to have read the books several times." Perhaps that's why she gives a great performance! So remember the name of this particular character?

Question 3

Name this character

We also met this character during the first film of the Harry Potter franchise, but she was shown briefly. In the second film, she got a bigger role and then it sort of varied. We know her as Ron's sister and as we see in the last film Harry's future wife. Since she is Ron's sister, she is also Molly Weasley's daughter. When the actress Bonnie Wright was asked about how it was to have Julie Andrews as her on-screen mother, she said: "She's really kind of open and friendly towards all of us - she likes to have that family ring around us all. She's bubbly on set" (IMDb). Have said that we love Julie Andrews already? Well we do! Remember this character's name?

Question 4

Name this character

Which brings us to her only son. We meet this character from the very first film as we see Harry’s life outside the wizarding world. It is clear that this character always gets what he wants and therefore that his parents have spoiled him. The character is portrayed by the actor Harry Melling. According to IMDb, “Harry Potter casting agents held auditions at Hendon School for the second movie, after being impressed by Harry's performance” which we have to say was indeed very impressive. We’re not supposed to like this character, so Harry Melling does his job perfectly! Does the name of this particular character come to mind?

Let’s go to another quidditch player. This character, just like Harry, is a seeker. Of course, as we already know, he is not in House Gryffindor, but in House Slytherin. Further, although we’ve always seen this character with silver hair, it turns out that Tom Felton’s “natural hair color is dark blonde [and that] he bleached his hair platinum blonde for all eight of the Harry Potter films” (IMDb). So, in one of his final interviews for Harry Potter, Tom Felton has said that “he was looking forward to not having to dye his hair anymore” (IMDb) and we can understand why! Remember the name of this character?

Question 6

Name this character

This character is introduced to us from the very first Harry Potter film, i.e. Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone (2001). After all, he is the Hogwarts caretaker, so whenever we are at Hogwarts we get to see him do his thing (which most of the time is complaining about the students!). It may not be wildly known, but this character is a squib, or what Wikipedia has defined as “a wizard-born, a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent.” In essence, a squib is the exact opposite of a muggle-born witch or wizard. So, remember his name?

Question 7

What may come as a surprise, however, is that Helena Bonham Carter was “cast as [this character] after Helen McCrory became pregnant, and would have been nearly full-term when her scenes were shot” (IMDb). This character is not the bravest one in the beginning of the franchise (at least not in the traditional way of being brave as in fighting an enemy) but he definitely is a Gryffindor. Remember the name of this particular character?

Question 9

Name this character

And since we’re talking about Voldemort, why not focus on his younger version before his transformation to a villain. He had a very difficult childhood and this perhaps had to do a lot with the fact that he became Voldemort. After he discovered that he was a wizard he “speedily developed into a power-obsessed megalomaniac [and] he was unable and unwilling to express remorse or empathy for the countless crimes he had committed” (Wikipedia). That is why so many people didn’t want to go against him. Some were like him, and some didn’t want to be on the opposite side of his wand. Before he was called Voldemort, he had another name. Remember that name?

Question 10

Name this character

Is there a more lovable Harry Potter character out there? He is so kind and loving. Brave and sensitive. We just want to give him a big hug. He is the one that takes baby Harry away from his home in Godric's Hollow after the loss of his parents to the house of his aunt and uncle. He is the gatekeeper and the care of magical creatures professor. He is a character we'll always carry in our hearts. Perhaps our response to this character has to do a lot with Robbie Coltrane, the actor who portrays him. He was a perfect fit, so it is no surprise to learn that "he was personally selected by J.K. Rowling as her choice to play [this] half-giant [character] in the 'Harry Potter' films" (IMDb). Remember his name?

Despite being a relatively good-natured person, he only had eyes for people who he thought had talent” and we have to say this is quite accurate. Further, according to Wikipedia, “in the wizarding world, [this character] is known for being a well-meaning, reasonable and competent every-man, trying to take care of his family and do the right thing. [He is] a man of principle” and we couldn’t agree more with this description. So, does the name of this character come to mind?

Question 13

Name this character

She is very protective of her children and she would do anything for them. It turns out that Julie Walters almost didn’t get the part but eventually “beat out Lesley Nicol for [this] role” (IMDb). Further, she has stated for this role that “it was so sad when I finished. It may come as a surprise, but it turns out that he “was one of the directors considered for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)” (IMDb). This one time that she did, the prophecy about Voldemort and a boy born in July, marked Harry’s life. The character is brilliantly portrayed by Emma Thompson who “accepted [this] role […] to impress her daughter, Gaia” (just like Gary Oldman did!). So, remember the name of this character?

Name this character

Let’s go to another favorite female character. Maggie Smith might be one of the best reasons to love cats (who knows maybe there’s more to them!). We love this character because she reminds us of a sweet grandmother or aunt or mother or neighbor. She is that one woman that will always have our backs from the beginning till the very end as we saw when she hurried to protect Harry from Snape in the last film. Interestingly enough, “the fight scene between her and Alan Rickman was almost scrapped during the script process of the film. However, author 'J.K Rowling' insisted that” these characters should be included “as she saw it as a key moment for Smith's character” (IMDb) which is very true. Remember the name of that character?

Besides having a thing with Harry, this character also dated Cedric Diggory prior to his loss. He even took her to the Yule Ball. When Katie Leung, the actress portraying this character, was asked about her experience of being included in the Harry Potter universe, she said: "If this turns out to be my only film then I think it would be pretty cool to be known as Harry Potter's first crush” (IMDb) and that’s quite awesome! Name this character

We are introduced to this character in the first film, and we love him instantly. He is the team leader of the Gryffindor quidditch team and its keeper. Unfortunately for us, the character was included only in the first two films. No worries, however, since we got two awesome performances by Sean Biggerstaff in the first two films.
