The Pokemon franchise began primarily as Pokemon Red and Blue, (Red and Green in Japan), the first pair of video games that were released primarily for the original Game Boy console. They came out in 1996. Since that year, Pokemon has become the highest grossing media franchise of all time. It has earned over 90 billion dollars in total franchise revenue. It is the second best selling original video game series, (behind Nintendo's Mario franchise). The games have sold over 300 million copies.

On top of the success in the video game market, and anime television series was released to become the most successful video game adaptation. There have been over 20 seasons of the series, and over 1000 different episodes.

As if the games and television weren't enough, they control the top-selling trading card game, which has sold over 25.7 billion cards. There has been a full series of movies, a live action movie, comic books, music, and a ton of merchandise to match.

With such a successful series, there are a ton of different Pokemon species to fill it up. Many species are represented in other games including the Super Smash Brothers series. In total there are 809 individual types of Pokemon, but this quiz only tests your knowledge on 50 coming from the first three generations. Only a true gym leader can name them all...
