The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017) first premiered on 10 September 2009. It's been almost 10 years and even if the series ended in 2017, the TV show still has a place in our hearts.
We love the Salvatore brothers and the drama that they bring with them. We love the addition of the Original family and the power dynamics between Klaus and Elijah. Actually, we loved it so much that a spin-off TV series was created as we all know!
What makes The Vampire Diaries stand out is that it's not simply a teen vampire horror drama. We get to see more than that. We get to see the past and the present and how things have changed since then. Or how many things haven't change. The founding families taking action against vampires, for instance, is one of those things.
It's also about chance and fate, and that is a great addition to the TV show (well we can't say a lot of things about that; it may relate to a question or two!).
So, let's see how many real The Vampire Diaries fans are out there! Let's start having fun by answering as many questions as we can to impress the Salvatore brothers!

From the very moment this series begins, we understand that she is the female protagonist. She is shown to be kind and hurt by something in her life which we later find out is the loss of her parents. As we all know, this series is adapted by L. J. Smith’s young adult horror novels The Vampire Diaries. According to Wikipedia, this character was “‘really kind of selfish’” in the books. But in the series her “‘selfishness’ in the books as a human was never explored, because it ‘didn't ever feel like a characteristic’ the show wanted for their heroine.” Well the truth is that if she were selfish, she wouldn’t be the character we know today, so it’s a good thing the production didn’t go there. Who was Elena's first boyfriend?
Elena has several boyfriends throughout the years that The Vampire Diaries was on the air. Her first boyfriend always felt that she is the one or what the Urban Dictionary has defined as “absolutely, positively the only person on earth you are meant to be with. soul mate and best friend.” But as we all know the perfect relationship doesn’t exist. Perhaps Elena felt the same way about him in the beginning of their relationship, but later on she stopped thinking about him like that. It took some time, but eventually he came to understand that she was right and they weren’t meant to grow old together (if that applies to them of course!). Remember who was Elena’s first boyfriend?

The setting of a TV series or a film is very important to the plot most of the times. In some cases, we are thrown into the world of a big city! Think of New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco! Other times, we get a glimpse of a small town because it is vital to the plot that everybody knows each other. Think of TV series like One Tree Hill (2003-2012) or Gilmore Girls (2000-2007). Bonnie is a...?
We all know Bonnie (Kat Graham) and we all love Bonnie! Both of her sides are awesome. She is supportive and feisty, and she will do anything for her friends. According to Wikipedia, “the casting call [for Bonnie] was: Seventeen years old, bubbly, adorable, loyal and bighearted, she is Elena's best friend who senses that Stefan is dangerous.” She is all that and so much more. Loyal and brave to the very end. Even if we love her relationship with Elena, perhaps the friendship she eventually shares with Damon is more endearing! Remember what type of supernatural creature Bonnie is?
Why was Klaus pursuing Elena?
Now we know that a vampire is a supernatural being. He/she is immortal and has powers that overcome any boundaries of a human organism: excessive strength, the power of compulsion, and superhuman speed. In essence a vampire is a predator, or what Cambridge dictionary has termed as “an animal that hunts, hurts, and eats other animals.” As a predator, a vampire has and needs a prey. The vampire’s prey is the human race when it comes to diet, but of course they can harm other species as well even their own. Klaus is a vampire that is known to go to extremes in order to get what he wants. He even takes lives to hurt someone else. Remember why he was pursuing Elena?
How was Caroline turned into a vampire?
We weren’t sure how to feel about Caroline in the beginning. After all that’s the point with this character. According to Wikipedia, “the casting call [for Caroline] was: 17 years old, a beautiful but slightly manufactured-looking queen bee type, she is friends - and rivals - with Elena. Though she does care about Elena, Caroline is resentful of her relationship with Stefan.” That does describe Caroline to the tee (at least the Caroline we see in season 1!). She is a very complicated character later on, and that has to do (at least partly!) with her turning into a vampire. Remember how she turned into a vampire?
Who is Jenna?
Jenna (Sara Canning) is one of the characters in The Vampire Diaries universe that most fans like. She’s always trying her best, and she wants to do the right thing and wants the best for Elena and Jeremy. Perhaps that is why she prefers Stefan as Elena’s boyfriend; she sees a type of integrity in him. According to Wikipedia, “in the books, [she] does not approve the relationship of Elena and Stefan, and would rather that Elena be with Damon instead. In the series, Jenna agrees with the relationship of Elena and Stefan, but she worries about [Elena] when she is with Damon” (That’s hilarious!). Remember who Jenna is?
Who is Elena's biological father?
When the TV show begins, Elena and Jeremy have lost their parents and they live with their aunt Jenna. Later on we find out that Elena’s biological parents aren’t Miranda Sommers Gilbert and Grayson Gilbert; they just adopted her and raised and loved her as their own. According to Medium Family, “it feels like a bad joke. Finding out you are adopted late in life [affects] part of your identity and turns your life upside down.” This is exactly what happens to Elena. This character is the sister of Klaus, Elijah, Kol, and Finn. According to Wikipedia, “as the only female Original Vampire - and with Amara being cured and gone- she is the oldest and most powerful female vampire on the planet.” As the only female Original vampire, she was treated a bit differently both by Elijah and Klaus. Sometimes they saw her as their little sister whom they had to protect. Others they (especially Klaus) felt that she was not mature enough to make her own decisions, so they were deciding for her. Who turned Stefan into a vampire?
When a human is turned into a vampire a certain relationship occurs between that human and the vampire that turned him/her. According to Wikipedia, that connection is called a Sire Bond and it is defined as “the link between the Sire and their Sired that exists within the vampire and hybrid species” that forces “the Sired [to] comply with the direct and indirect orders of the Sire in order to show its loyalty.” We see that a lot of times throughout the years The Vampire Diaries was on the air, but most of the times we saw it with the hybrids that Klaus created. Did Stefan experience such a bond with his creator? Remember who that creator was?
Who spent some time with the original vampire family during the 1920s?
The 1920s are also known as the Roaring Twenties. According to Wikipedia, “the Roaring Twenties refers to the decade of the 1920s in Western society and Western culture. It was a period of economic prosperity with a distinctive cultural edge in the United States and Western Europe.” In the flashbacks of the original vampires we see exactly that. People dancing, drinking and having fun by spending an excessive amount of money. Perhaps an era like this was the perfect hideout for vampires that fed on humans. People weren’t really paying that much attention when they were out having fun. We see that in the original vampires’ flashbacks as well. Remember which vampire spend some time with the original vampires back in the 1920s?
Who told Elena that he loved her and then compelled her to forget?
First of all, compelling someone, that is to say mind compulsion, has been defined by Wikipedia as “an ability of Immortals, Original Vampires, Vampires and Hybrids to control the mind of another simply through eye contact.” So, if a vampire wanted a human to do something, he/she can just look them in the eyes and tell them what to do; that person would listen. We’ve seen it happen a lot throughout the years that The Vampire Diaries was on the air. One time a supernatural creature tells Elena that he loves her, but then he wants her to forget it. Remember who that supernatural being was?
Who becomes a vampire hunter?
First of all, a Vampire Hunter, according to Wikipedia, is “a person that hunts vampires or hybrids usually with the intention of permanently [taking them out]. They often use special weapons, surprise or stealth tactics in order to be able to overpower their much stronger opponents. Hunters' crusades against vampires go almost as far back as vampirism itself.” We know of course that the original vampire hunter was Mikael, the father of the original vampires (well, almost all of them!). After he saw what they had become, he wanted to get rid of his children because he saw how unnatural they were. Remember any other vampire hunter we saw throughout the years in the TV series?
Name Damon and Stefan's father
We meet Stefan and Damon’s father in Stefan’s flashbacks. He is portrayed by James Remar, who at that point he was also playing the father of Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s Dexter (2006-2013). When James Remar was asked about his character and how he will relate to the story during an interview for Dread Central, he said that he is an aristocrat in the 1860s and hails from Italy. The interview went on to state, "It’s the Civil War Era, and it’s about how he relates to his boys.” Well his relationship with his sons is very important because as we saw he favors Stefan over Damon and that might be one of the reasons there is tension between the brothers. Which one DOESN'T date Caroline?
As we said before, Caroline was one of the characters who inspired very ambiguous responses from the audience. After all, she goes through a big transformation both in terms of her personality and physically. During an interview in C2E2, Candace Accola was asked if she knew anything about her character’s transformation beforehand. To that, she replied that she “had no idea that all of this was going to happen. Perhaps the writers have a master plan that we still don’t know where it will lead.” Well we couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen with Caroline and who she would end up with as we watched the show! Stefan is the doppelgänger of...?
First of all, according to Wikipedia, “doppelgängers, also known as Shadow-Selves or Mortal Shadow Selves, are a supernatural occurrence that was created by Nature as a result of [that first couple] becoming true immortals after consuming Qetsiyah's immortality elixir.” We know, for instance, that Elena and Katherine are the doppelgängers of Amara. That is why they are identical to one another, as if they were identical twins. Elena is the last Petrova doppelgänger, at least she is the last that we know of. Stefan is also a doppelgänger and he too is identical to his original self. Remember the name of that guy?
Who is Damon's best friend?
We’ve talked about Damon and the two sides of him that we both love and sometimes dislike. According to Wikipedia, “at the start of season 1, Damon was a self-proclaimed loner [who] often kept to himself. Despite his initially antagonistic relationships with humans such as Alaric Saltzman and Sheriff Elizabeth Forbes, Caroline's mother, Damon gradually involved himself into the lives of many people in Mystic Falls by developing friendships with several humans.” We know that Elena was the love of his life, but who is Damon’s best friend? Towards the end of the series, he even admits it, first in writing and then verbally! Remember who is Damon’s best friend?
Who turned Damon into a vampire?
We meet Damon while he has been a vampire for over a century. We are accustomed to a specific type of behavior from Damon, so when we see Stefan’s flashbacks, we are a bit surprised. He is very different, and we almost can’t see how this change in him occurred over the years. Of course, the trigger of that change was his becoming a vampire. We see how he struggles during transitioning, or what Wikipedia has defined as “the process in which a human, witch or werewolf, who undergoes the process of transitioning into a vampire, and is noted as being” in a sort of in-between space. Remember who turned Damon into a vampire?
How does Stefan find out that Elena kissed Damon?
Elena and Damon have a very complicated relationship. Starting as enemies, then some sort of alliance was formed. Eventually, they became friends, and at some point Elena realized that she is in love with him. Of course, Damon was in love with her long before that. So he did anything he could to keep her in his life even if she was just a friend. Nina Dobrev has been asked about her opinion on Damon and Elena’s relationship a lot of times. According to Wikipedia, she has stated that “Elena and Damon had a connection that was unlike any other. And you could see it onscreen. It was a very tumultuous back-and-forth relationship” (Well, yes we totally agree!). Remember how Stefan found out about their kiss back in season 3?
How does Elena find out that Stefan is a vampire?
So Elena meets Stefan and they eventually start dating. At this point, however, Elena doesn’t know that Stefan is a vampire. She thinks that he is a high school student like she and her friends are. Now learning that our partner is a vampire should be a dealbreaker or what the Urban Dictionary defines as “a term popularized by Liz Lemon from 30 rock which is used to describe the event which led to a breakup with someone or something.” And for Elena it is (at least when she first finds out about it). Remember how Elena learned that Stefan is a vampire?
Why do Elena and Stefan break up after she becomes a vampire?
As we all know, Stefan and Elena were the star couple of the show. The plot revolved around them mostly and fans thought they were endgame or as it is stated in the Urban Dictionary endgame has to do with “a couple you ship on a TV show that you hope ends the series together.” Elena and Stefan broke it off some times. One of those times was after Elena turned into a vampire. Although they loved each other very much their relationship was affected very much by Elena’s transformation. However, that's not the main reason for the breakup. Remember why they broke up after Elena turned into a vampire?
Why does Elena turn off her humanity in season 4?
Turning off one’s humanity or emotions is a skill that only vampires have. According to Wikipedia, “a Vampire who has completely turned off their emotions is also said to have completely shut down their humanity, making them carefree and remorseless about their actions and impervious to guilt and conscience.” The disadvantage about turning emotions off is that when a vampire turns them back on, the first few days are very difficult. Every emotion is magnified. In season 4, after she has transformed into a vampire, Elena decides to turn off her humanity after much consideration. Remember why she turned it off?

During an episode of the earlier seasons, one of our favorite vampires is asked not to do “something stupid.” In response he says: “but stupid is much more fun” to which he was asked again to be “the better man.” Being the better man according to the Urban Dictionary is about “showing that he is above something. To be superior and show true dominance over someone or something.” Because the person who asks him that is someone he really cares about, he actually takes his/her advice. How do Elena and Stefan first meet?
Stefan and Elena were the main couple at the beginning of The Vampire Diaries. The plot centered around them, so the casting of the couple was significant and tricky. According to Wikipedia, Bob Levy, an executive producer of the TV show, has claimed that “for the pilot and TV series to work, the relationship between Elena and Stefan had to be magic. I said to myself, 'This is phenomenal.' Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev have real chemistry." They do indeed! It’s one of the reasons many fans were hooked on the TV show in the very beginning! We talked about Damon and Stefan’s father. The time has come to talk about their mother. Unlike their father, their mother is included in the present storyline in later seasons, while their father is only shown in Stefan’s flashbacks. According to Wikipedia, “in the books, she played a crucial and important role in the relationship between the Salvatore brothers. Her loss caused Damon to go against Stefan, as he blamed Stefan for her untimely and unexpected loss.” Well considering that their relationship is so strained to begin with, this additional burden could have made them even more estranged. A very common thing that we see in TV series like The Vampire Diaries is that exes almost always stay friends. There are many reasons to stay friends with an ex but not everyone is a good and healthy reason according to Psychology Today. From “feeling that we don’t want to lose our best friend” to “feeling bad for them.” But another main reason is that we may still have feelings for them since “being in love with your ex, and secretly hoping to win them back, can be a powerful motivation for staying friends with them.” Remember who said this quote? Who was compelled by Katherine to love her?
We’ve all have experienced at least once in our lives a moment of Unrequited love. According to Wikipedia “unrequited love or one-sided love is love that is not openly reciprocated or understood as such by the beloved. The beloved may not be aware of the admirer's deep and strong romantic affection, or may consciously reject it.” While humans have to move on, a vampire doesn’t have to deal with all this (leaving morals aside!). Katherine was in love with someone who initially felt the same way. Later on, however, he moved on and she didn’t. Actually instead of moving on, she compels him to love her back. Both Katherine and Elena have created tension in the relationship of Damon and Stefan. Damon was madly in love with Katherine and she always favored Stefan, and Stefan was in love with Elena, but she always defended Damon and even chose him after some time. This tension between Damon and Stefan can be an instance of sibling rivalry or what Wikipedia has termed as “a type of competition or animosity among siblings.” We can see, therefore, that Damon and Stefan have fallen in love both with Katherine and Elena. Before marrying Stefan, Caroline is engaged to someone else. Now she wasn’t exactly a runaway bride or what YourDictionary has defined as a “bride-to-be who runs away from a wedding shortly before the ceremony, often due to so-called cold feet” but she was supposed to marry someone else. Perhaps that someone was either a safe choice (but not necessarily one she really wanted) or it was an all-consuming and very passionate type of love (which was very tumultuous and perhaps was too much for her at times). Stefan Salvatore is one of the characters from The Vampire Diaries that fans love. He is kind and sweet and very caring, but he also has a side that he tries to fight. According to Wikipedia, the actor who plays Stefan Salvatore “described the young Stefan as ‘naive and willing to ride whatever wave life threw’ him, because he was ‘easily manipulated’ and ‘innocent’ with a ‘beautiful young soul.’” Well we can’t say that we don’t agree with him. Love is a word that sometimes we use very loosely or very broadly. That’s because love can mean many different things. An example of this range of meanings is that the love of a mother differs from the love of a spouse, which differs from the love of food. Most commonly, love refers to a feeling of strong attraction and emotional attachment.” Now Elena has a lot of friends and she had some boyfriends as well. Damon Salvatore: the bad boy that Elena Gilbert knows she shouldn't fall for who she eventually ends up with! There are so many things that we both love about Damon and we don’t like. According to Wikipedia, “the initial casting call for the character required an actor in his early- to mid-twenties to play a ‘darkly handsome, strong, charming, and smug vampire who can go from casual and playful to bad in less than a heartbeat.’” We can safely say that this is exactly who Damon Salvatore is. When a book is adapted into a movie or a TV show, fans feel somewhat uneasy about the casting choice the production will make. In general, this actress has done justice to the character even if the TV show focused on different sides of the character than the books. Of course, Elena has a lot of sides. We love both her kind and her passionate nature. What drew the actress who plays Elena to this role, according to Wikipedia, had to do with the fact that Elena was "this average girl who was damaged in many ways.” Well, we can’t say no to that! How many seasons did the show run for?
Perhaps vampire stories have become our thing in the last decade or so. Think of the Twilight Saga franchise, this TV series and its spin-off The Originals (2013-2018). Because of this, Kevin Williamson, one of the show’s creators, had his doubts about the show. According to Wikipedia, he later on “started to become intrigued by the story: ‘I began to realize that it was a story about a small town, about that town's underbelly and about what lurks under the surface.’ Williamson has stated the town's story will be the main focus of the series rather than high school.” This is exactly what makes the story stand out, and why it ran for so many years!
